Revelry and romance abound in this delightful adaptation of Franz Lehar's giddy opera, staged with verve by the National Ballet of Canada. Set in the Belle Epoque where a decadent society faces financial ruin, this full flavoured tale follows the fortunes of the titular widow Hanna and the search to find her a husband and secure the future of the principality of Pontevedro in one fell swoop.
Waltzingly whimsical and full of schemes, disguises and gaiety, let yourself be swept away by this glorious story, replete with the company's wonderful talents and high design values.
What is the story of the Merry Widow?
Paris, long ago - widow Hanna Glawari is resisting the attempts of Baron Zeta, the Grand Duchy, to force her into marriage with a potential suitor, therefore keeping her newly gained 20 million francs in the economy. Throwing lavish parties and balls for Hanna, he settles on Danilo, a fine citizen of Pontevedro. But Danilo and Hanna have a history: he won't marry her for her money and she won't budge until she hears those three words spill from his lips...
