Comical Ballet Masterpiece

The National Ballet of Canada presents the world premiere of Van Caniparoli's reimagining of the beloved ballet Coppelia! Perhaps one of the most cherished ballet staples of the modern repertory, Leo Delibes and Charles Nuitter's original Coppelia has become adored for its perfect balance of comedy, whimsy, fantasy, and exquisite choreography. Under the eye of artistic director Hope Muir who commissioned this full-length original work, the company brings new life to a 19th century classic, courtesy of Caniparoli's new spin on the story which places Dr. Coppelius and his workshop at the center of the narrative.

What Is Dr Coppelia About?

The original Coppelia tells the tale of two young lovers Franz and Swanhilda. When Franz encounters a life-size doll made by the village's eccentric and much ridiculed Dr. Coppelius, he becomes infatuated with the doll's motionless beauty, much to the dismay of his betrothed Swanhilda. In this reimagining we see the story from the Doctor's side, learning that his plans are perhaps not as nefarious as might have been thought.
