Two thrillers from Canadian Opera Company
In a one-of-a-kind meeting of two fantastic operatic thrillers, The Canadian Opera Company present a stunning double-bill performance performance of Bela Bartok's opera Duke Bluebeards Castle as well as Schoenberg's Erwartung. Conducted by Johannes Debus, the performance brings to life the work of original director of these productions Robert LePage, with Francois Racine directing the revival with due care to their brilliance.
Bluebeard's Castle is a dark, erotic thriller, combining fantasy and the dangers of too much knowledge. When Judith leaves her peaceful life behind to explore the darkness of Bluebeard, she is faced with seven locked doors within his domain. Some of these doors contain horrors, others treasure - but will she see what lies behind the last door - and what will it mean for her?
Erwartung is a one-act, modernist exploration of the human psyche. A woman wanders alone through a forest at night, searching for her lover. As she moves deeper into the woods, her thoughts and emotions become increasingly fragmented, swinging between hope, fear, longing and despair.
