A fascinating look at King Lear's daughters - and their fight to be heard
Toronto's esteemed Soulpepper theatre company delves into Shakespeare's tale of an elderly monarch this summer, in a duo of plays that look at the aging King Lear of Britain and his daughters. Written by Erin Sheilds, Queen Goneril takes place seven years before the events of King Lear and focuses on the challenges faced by his daughters as the heirs presumptive to the kingdom.
What is the story
Bringing the characters of Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia to the forefront, Queen Goneril sees these three daughters of the King pushing boundaries and trying to find their places in their father's world, where their ambitions are foiled by the patriarchal society around them. Sheilds' new work makes their voices heard in a way like never before.
