Based On Edith Wharton's Naturalist Novel
Written in 1892 by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Edith Wharton, The Bunner Sisters novella painted a naturalist portrait of poverty, society and the bonds of sisterhood at the turn of the century. Praised for its poignant examination of the struggling lower classes through the lense of American moral values, the story takes to the stage at Toronto's Young Centre for the Performing Arts this Summer.
Set in New York, the tale unfolds in a women's accessories store, run by spinster sisters Ann Eliza and Evelina. The pair are just about to make ends meet by sewing artificial flowers and other ornaments, but must work their fingers to the bone to keep on surviving. When an enigmatic and handsome clock maker Mr. Ramy enters their lives, he becomes the object of both of their affections, testing their sisterly bonds. At first, it appears that Mr. Ramy would make a fine husband, yet his attractive outward appearance conceals a dark truth...
