Ikumagialiit

Ikumagialiit at Harbourfront Centre Studio

Why see Ikumagialiit?

Those that need fire

Don't miss your chance to catch this stunning one night only performance from Ikumagialiit ("those that need fire") quartet. Combining the of the talents of Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory, Christine Tootoo, Cris Derksen, and Jamie Griffiths, expect an evening of structured improvisations that utilize contemporary Uaajeerneq (Greenlandic mask dance), throat singing, electric cello/beats, and hand-drawn light and video projections to tell a unique tale.

Turning towards the question of how to hold space for fear when pressure is mounting, Ikumagialiit examines the metaphor of the bowhead whale, learning how to breathe in the depths and explores Inuit practices of meditation and spiritual skill-building to make this journey.

Ikumagialiit was commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada for Abadakone / Continuous Fire / Feu continuel in 2019. Funding has also been provided through The Inuit Art Foundation's Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Fund.
