DUD

The lighting, sound and stage left much to be desired. Too dark, sound way to bright and scenes relied heavily on the movie in the background. I have seen this before at the Fisher years ago and was really impressed. This production paled in comparison.

POOR PRERECORDED AUDIO, AND SECOND-RATE CAST ON APRIL 15, 2023 SHOW.

With the exception of the tenor who sang the role of Javert who was excellent and the little boy among the performers, the rest of the cast was mediocre; their voices lacked passion and "presence". If you don't believe this then listen to tenors like the late Luciano Pavarotti and others, to hear what good tenors sound like. It did not help that the audio system was poor or poorly set up: it sounded as if the engineers had chosen to attenuate both the treble and the bass, leaving only the middle frequencies; as a result, performers' voices sounded as if they were coming out of a cheap loud AM radio. I found myself longing for the likes of experts like Lea Salonga and true tenors.

MISERABLES, INDEED! SADLY.

Les Miserables is one of my all time favorites. I always make sure to grab tickets in town and out of town, I have seen many productions since it opened on Broadway and have never been disappointed. Opening night Denver 2023, I left the theatre disappointed for the very first time in over 30 yrs. Maybe I know the show too well and just could not embrace this production’s musical direction, I am not exactly sure, but something was off. The beautiful familiar notes and harmonies from some of the main cast were not there last night. The deep iconic score felt rushed and thin at times, it was truly a disappointment. However, on a positive note, the brightest light and standout of the evening was Jean Valjean, a superb performance. Bravo to Garvroche and Enjolras. Well done, Gentlemen.

LEFT AT INTERMISSION - FORGETABLE PRODUCTION..

Fifth Ave. Theatre, Seattle, WA, May 26, 2023 Sound: Too loud, crackle, way down sometimes. Lighting: Too dark. Hard to see anyone's face or follow movements. Singing: Many flat notes from Fantine, young Cosette, Gavroche, and a few from the others. Unacceptable. Acting: Fantine wasn't there in "I Dreamed A Dream." No conviction, and instead of being on her knees, devastated, she just stood there, "yeah, whatever." Susan Boyle sang it way better. Wish she could have time traveled 30 years back and done this role. Cosette and Marius: Very good! Voices on pitch, relationship worked - love at first sight can be trite: theirs wasn't. Best performances of the show. Jean Valjean: Not riveting. Staging: Static. The old revolving stage production, dramatically and literally, kept things moving. Removing it was a big mistake. Pace: Too slow. All numbers sung below tempo. In sum: Glad I saw other productions that were truly sensational.

HORRIBLE SOUNDING

It's a satire! Loud, incongruent and incomprehensible. I could hear the audience breathing more than the cast. I hate to be mean but the lead female singer is not a singer! She'd go in and out. Not worth of $300 ticket--amateurs. I'd pay $20 for that. Very very disappointing. A shame.

UNINTELLIGIBLE SOUND, BROADWAY STAGING MAGIC GONE.

This will be my fourth performance over 25 years and by far nothing close to the other three. We sat in the in the 19th row, center a perfect location. My wife whom it was her first performance, could not follow the story because the sound quality was so poor, the dialogue was garbled and unintelligible. The bigger disappointment for me, who knew the story and music, was the stripped down staging, replaced by a cheesy rear projection screen that made the performers size appear out of scale with others off to the side of the stage. It was hard to judge the cast’s performances, not being able to hear them, this performance most definitely misses the polish of previous versions. At the end of the first act, I asked my wife if she was able to follow the story, she said “only that it was about the French Revolution” that’s all she understood. I suppose if you had never seen it, you’d have enjoyed it of course if you had someone to explain afterwards what happed. Wait and see it in New York.

LE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND A WORD

The sets were very impressive, the acting very impressive, the orchestra very impressive, and of course the Pantages is always impressive. With that being said, I could only understand about 10% of what they were saying/singing. I am no theater expert, but I have spoken English for 60 years or so, and I struggled to understand the words. So much so that during the second act, I checked out. I have read the reviews and many say the same, yet they give 5 stars, I call it as I hear it. The wife loved it and that is really the most important part.
