NOT QUITE THE SAME AS BROADWAY -- BUT NOT THE CAST'S FAULT

We've seen this four times -- three times in New York and also in Toronto. It's a great show no matter where you see it but one review I read was a bit lukewarm about the Toronto production while others were gloating over it. I agree a bit with the more tepid Toronto review but it's not the cast's fault. The variable dynamic is the audience. In New York you're a couple of blocks from a fire house that lost personnel on 9/11. The synergy from the audience conveys both solemnity and gratitude. The emotional feedback from the Broadway audience is way different than Toronto. Not to say the Canadian audience is cold and detached -- far from it -- but there isn't the same emotional bond between the cast and audience. The Toronto audience "gets" the Canadian humor that in New York is more comic relief than comical. It might be more moving if perhaps video/audio from 9/11 was incorporated to maybe set the mood. The Toronto cast does its best but the audience synergy is different.

INCREDIBLE

There was nothing that I did not like about this musical! The energy in the show was contagious, bringing you on an exciting and heart-wrenching journey from beginning to end. The story was told carefully, handling issues of terrorism and islamophobia with compassion. During the show, you also quickly became connected with the characters and with the Newfoundland culture. This show made me feel deep-seated pride in my Newfoundland heritage and my Canadian identity.
