NAP TIME

Let's keep it simple. Periodically one might quickly scan through a downloaded movie desperately searching for someone to be speaking to make sure the movie is in the language which you speak...this becomes frustrating and you quickly realize how little dialogue there is in movies these days. King Charles III is literally two plus hours of non stop Hodge podge put you to sleep dialogue. I never bought into the performances being anything but performances, the body language was forced at best. minor characters would literally have more lines than they'll likely see in a dozen other roles they'll perform put together. There is zero set decoration, zero props, zero anything but dialogue. after ninety minutes Charles comes out in uniform (Red) and I almost stood up and applauded as it was the first thing on stage that wasn't black or grey. The only thing impressive of this performance in my view is the fact that they all remember their lines (non stop drawn out blah blah)

NOT FIT FOR A KING!

One hopes "opening night" will be special, and that a play about the monarchy will at least convey a hint of the regal. Alas this is not the case with King Charles iii. The venue is spartan and the setting austere. The costumes seem wrong. Camilla uncharacteristically makes " the best dressed list", whilst Kate wears an outfit that is unfashionably dour, even allowing for the fact she is in mourning garb. The honorary service uniforms worn by Charles and Harry look ill fitting and tired, as if they had been borrowed from a local marching band. The rest of the cast almost seem too casually dressed. The actors struggle with a flawed plot with it's flawed premise. The ghosts of "Diana past" and Liz 2 past" add to a sense of total discordance. Understandably the actors do not appear to feel comfortable in the shoes they are asked to wear. It is hard to relate to or feel anything for the characters here, except pity for the competent cast. We were invited to a Q & A afterwards. No thanks

I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS PLAY...

I tried hard to get my head into the plot but it was so ridiculous that it was impossible. I thought this play would be funny or at least clever but it was just boring. The actual monarchy is more entertaining. The use of ghosts was far fetched to say the least, but could have worked with a little humour. The worst part for me was the time spent wondering what the hell is wrong with the writer. Every character sounds like a character from a Jane Austen novel who has suffered a mini stroke. It was hard to listen to and utterly ridiculous. We left at intermission and the second half improved immensely by being in our home instead of in the theatre.
