A MOVING PERFORMANCE

An amazing performance with a touching story line, impeccable performances by the cast and songs that strike a chord! I would recommend this musical to everyone who has a love for the theater :D

FANTASTIC PREFORMANCE

Grateful to all involved in creation of Sousatzka. Thank you. My favourite musical. I was surprised and deeply touched by the meaningful story line delivered in an entertaining, spectacular performance. I connected with characters of the show as a mother, as an immigrant, as an admirer of music and as an offspring of victims of genocide. Sousatzka's story is a perfect example of how despite life hardships love prevails and love heals. PS. Loved Mother's song

GREAT MUSICAL WITH COLOURFUL CAST .

One of the best musicals that we have seen lately. Amazing colourful and breath taking cast. All the negative professional reviews even don't have facts right. Book was reaten in 1982 not 1962 ,Suzatzka escaped from Poland and not from Russia as negative review indicates.

STUNNING

Such a powerful and moving story. This show is a reflection of the tensions that prevalent today and is truly what the world needs to see right now. The direction is stunning and the set is unbelievable. The cast and storyline moved me to tears multiple times throughout the performance. David Shire, Richard Maltby Jr, and Lebo M have created incredible music with powerful lyrics. As a songwriting major at Berklee College of Music, I paid extra close attention to the music and lyrics and was amazed at how perfectly the two fit together. I highly recommend this show to anyone! The story is great, the music is great, and the message is so important in today's society.

I attended the show on March 8th. What can I say that hasn't already been said? I laughed a little and cried a little. What a great and moving musical. Remarkable singing. Bravo!

JUST "WOW"

This was epic! Garth Drabinsky dug deep to bring this multifaceted story to life. The music, the scenery, the choreography, the vocals, the costumes ... It was so deep, rich and breathtaking!!! I have not seen anything comparable to this since Phantom of The Opera. It is truly epic. If you are in TO, you would be very remiss to lose out on visiting the historical Elgin Theatre. This is not an ideal show for kids under Grade 7. There is some pretty mature content and much of the music is quite sophisticated. There are lots of great restaurants near by. Fran's is great for midnight comfort food. The Pantages Hotel is great for apres theatre libations. We typically go to Baton Rouge while in that area and have never been disappointed. Hard Rock Cafe is just up the street as well.

SURPRISED AND BLOWN AWAY!

I received free tickets through work and decided to bring my musically inclined brother with me to the opening night of previews. We knew nothing about the show and were a little bit skeptical. Well, we had no reason to be. Both of us are seasoned theatre goers, having seen a number of musicals in both Toronto and on Broadway. This absolutely blew us away. My brother said it's his favourite musical so far. The story is rich, the music and choreography were phenomenal, and the production itself was unique and every thoughtful. It hit every range of emotion, and there wasn't a dull moment. Victoria Clark stole the show, but her young student played by Jordan Barrow was very impressive as well. There was so much talent on that stage, it would have been hard to stand out, but he did an amazing job - particularly for someone so young. Definitely go and see this musical!

SOUSATSKA THE MUSICAL

As a Toronto actor and somewhat musical, I can speak to this musical from many angles, and from every angle, it's a stunning tour de force! From a great script to melodious tunes, fabulous costume design and exquisite backdrops with special effects, this play is destined to be a mega hit on BROADWAY and everywhere it goes! BRAVO Mr. Drabinsky. As far as venues go, the ELGIN theatre is a premier venue worthy of any show! This is a 5 star performance! suitable for all ages. My congratulations to everyone involved.

MOVING MUSICAL

This afternoon I thoroughly enjoyed a preview performance of Garth Drabinsky's production of Sousatzka, featuring the strong vocals of and moving performances by Victoria Clark as Madame Sousatzka and Judy Kaye as the Countess, both refugees from the holocaust and Poland. Jordan Barrow was totally believable as the Soweto refugee pianist prodigy Themba, supported well by the powerful voice of Ryan Allen as his father and by Montego Glover as his mother. John Hillner was comically delightful as a former vaudevillian, and Erin LeCroy poignant as the young Sousatzka. The juxtaposition of Apartheid and Nazi fascism was fascinating. The choreography by Graciela Daniele was wonderful, and the dancers performed with precision and vigour. I wondered if the stranger visit should come before the Royal Hall piano performance for a final scene, but I imagine the work is still in progress. Great afternoon!

AMAZING, EXCEPT...

Everything stellar but one notable exception: the music by David Shire. Unfortunately just didn't serve the rest of this phenomenal Garth Drabinsky production. Some numbers were also under-orchestrated but from what I read in the New York Post that was probably a contractual issue. I'll do them for free, Garth, if you're reading this; I love the story and what you've done to bring it to stage, just think it needs some music repairs! All other production elements were solid, especially the use of projections and moving elements. Really a great story and well told since I hadn't seen the movie or the book. Congrats! Yes, everybody adolescent and older should see this.

POTENTIAL DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Ambitious and moving, but could use some careful trimming to become leaner and tighter, On the plus side, it achieves its emotional goals: yes, the audience was completely wrecked at the end of the first act, after an incredibly powerful, restrained but artistically defensible treatment of horrifyingly real subject matter. But there's a lot of fat in between to be trimmed. Musically, the world beat stuff is amazing, the more conventional lyrical Broadway pieces are very good, the classical fugues are decent, but the modernistic 1980s pop/disco stuff doesn't work (and I actually like that kind of stuff). A fair bit of that from the first act could be excised, and maybe an expository number from the second as well. The best thing about this is it makes me want to see the show again after its official opening on Broadway.
