An enduring show that hits all the right notes
Toronto's very own LOT are kicking off their 2017/18 with a smash-hit musical that celebrates sisterhood, song and sacrifice for the greater good. First opening in 1981 on Broadway, it swept up the major awards and garnered such acclaim that it has become a success across the world. Even spawning a movie starring Queen Bey and winning an Academy Award for Jennifer Hudson, this engaging story is full of onstage joy and backstage drama, and the trials and tribulations that come with fame and fortune.
With a strong soul and Motown-based score that includes the hits "Steppin' to the Bad Side" "Cadillac Car" and "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," we journey with a trio of hopeful talents called Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White. Young, but determinedly ambitious, they are performing simply as The Dreamettes", when they are approached by ambitious agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. Desperate to find a group of backup singers for notable lothario and soul and rock'n'roll sensation James 'Thunder' Early , he lands them a lucrative touring job and begins to guide their quickly rising career. However, when the beautiful Deena emerges as the favored star of the group rather than the full-voiced and larger Effie, the girls are brought to personal and professional crossroads.
