Why See National Ballet of Canada: Cinderella?

BalletDance & Ballet

The National Ballet of Canada revives James Kudelka's 2004 production, that sets out to unearth more from the much loved Cinderella story than most adaptations. Replete with the irresistible Prokofiev score and David Boechler's to die for Art Deco sets and costumes, Kudelka's version focuses on Cinderella and the Prince finding an equal, peaceful partnership, with a simple life - rather than the riches and glamour of the original tale. You'll be thrown into Cinderella's adventure, as she battles against hilarious forces, an inebriated stepmother and two blundering step sisters.

ONCE UPON A TIME...

An enduring folk story, Cinderella has seen many incarnations since first appearing in Europe 500 years ago. Whilst some versions follow a bloody, medieval theme, the most popular is that of the downtrodden step-daughter, cheated from her inheritance by her evil step-mother and her less than appealing sisters. But their careful shielding of 'Cinders', who they treat as a servant, is all for nothing, as she is saved by a doting and magical fairy-godmother Transformed from ash-covered maid to sparkling princess, she captures the heart and the mind of the Prince at a lavish ball, who searches the Kingdom for the girl who left behind only a dainty glass slipper...
