Why See Sherlock Holmes?

PlaysStars on Stage

It's Elementary, My Dear Watson...

Perhaps best known for his quirky choice of movie roles in the 1990s with turns in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Scream and Never Been Kissed, Hollywood actor David Arquette is set to take on the role of the greatest detective that ever graced the pages of a book, Sherlock Holmes. Indeed it may seem an atypical casting choice, given the recent resurgence of Holmes fever (we're looking at you Mr. Cumberbatch), but Arquette is ready to put his own spin on the legendary gentleman of mystery, wryly stating "Some may think I'm an odd choice," he said. "I am. I'm odd, but thankfully so is he."

The actor will be joined by Michael Trevino, of The Vampire Diaries fame, as beloved sidekick Watson in this original adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's crime fiction masterpiece. Helmed by actor and director Andrew Shaver, who's imbued the Canadian production with an eclectic steam-punk flavour, the play was a sell out during its 2014 debut in Montreal.

What Is Sherlock Holmes About?

Amidst the ash and grime of Victorian London's backstreets and alleyways, the criminal underworld thrives... It is the time of iniquitous opium dens and a certain Mr. Ripper, of new inventions and technological advances that see electricity trickling throughout the city. Yet for all its illumination, shadowy figures still linger in the dark. Lord Neville St. John spearheads the movement to ban opium, giving a rousing speech at the House of Lords ahead of a vote on the matter. When a body is discovered and Lord Neville disappears under suspicious circumstances, the fledgling Scotland Yard calls in the aid of renowned sleuth Sherlock Holmes.
